The Tongarewa Scholarships are awarded annually to international students entering their first year of undergraduate or postgraduate study at Victoria University of Wellington.

These partial fee-based scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence and will be credited towards tuition fees for one year of study.

Recipients will also be guaranteed an offer of a place in one of the University’s Halls of Residence if they apply for accommodation by the University Accommodation Wellington deadline.


$5,000 or $10,000 for a year

Applicants must be:

  • International students who are paying full international fees

  • Permanent residency in an eligible Commonwealth country

  • Entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree.

You are not eligible for this scholarship if you:

  • Completed your secondary education at a New Zealand school

  • Completed the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or Foundation Studies Programme

  • Are a Study Abroad or Twinning student from one of our overseas partner universities

  • Are in your second year of study in the same degree program at Victoria University of Wellington.

To complete the online scholarship application, applicants must provide the following documents:

  • A personal statement of up to 500 words explaining their reasons for wanting to study at Victoria University of Wellington, their academic goals, and why they deserve the scholarship. Applicants should also include any leadership positions they have held and details of their involvement in their school or community.
  • Full transcripts and any other documentation relevant to the qualification type they are applying for must be provided.
  • An offer of a place from the Victoria University of Wellington, either conditional or unconditional, must be included with the application.

Applicants should ensure they provide accurate and comprehensive information in their personal statements and include all relevant documents supporting their application.

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must complete and submit an online application before the closing date.

The deadline for submission is strictly 4.30 pm on the specified closing date, and any late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. It is important to remember that all necessary supporting materials, such as references, must arrive by the deadline.

The application process usually opens one month before the closing date. If no application link is available now, applicants are advised to check back again closer to the closing date.
