The Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme (ISP), established by His Highness the Aga Khan, awards a limited number of scholarships on a 50% grant: 50% loan basis to gifted and outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies.

The scholarships are given out once a year through a competitive application process. The students can use them to study full-time for their postgraduate degrees at any reputable college or university of their choice.

VALUE AND DURATION

The Aga Khan Foundation gives money to bright students from developing countries who don’t have any other way to pay for their education.

The scholarship covers tuition fees and living expenses but does not include the cost of travel. It’s important to know that the scholarship comprises a 50% grant and a 50% loan. The loan must be paid back with a 5% annual service charge and an agreement signed by a guarantor.

The time to pay back the loan starts six months after the end of the foundation-funded study period and lasts for a total of five years.

The scholarship is given to Master’s degree students for the whole time they are in school. Ph.D. students, on the other hand, only get scholarships for the first two years of their program. After that, they are expected to find different ways to pay for the rest of their studies.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Academic Excellence: Applicants must have a strong academic record.

  • Financial Need: The ISP provides financial assistance based on the student’s needs. However, it is considered a resource of last resort, and applicants must demonstrate that they have explored and secured other funding sources. The financial award is determined individually by deducting the total of other grants, loans, parental contributions, and student employment income from the student’s eligible expenses. All students are encouraged to reduce the amount requested from the Foundation by seeking assistance from other sources.

  • Admission to a Reputable Institution: The program prioritizes Master’s degree courses but also considers applications for Ph.D. studies. Applicants must be admitted to a reputable postgraduate institution of higher learning. Local/regional universities and distance learning programs are acceptable for ISP funding, provided the courses maintain high standards.

  • Professional Experience, Extracurricular Achievements, and Leadership Skills: Strong professional experience, extracurricular achievements, volunteer contributions, and leadership skills are also considered when evaluating applicants.

Interviews with Local Scholarship Committees: Local scholarship committees may interview applicants to gather information about their financial situation, academic performance, extracurricular achievements, and career plans.
